In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. I welcome you,
my dear brothers and sisters. There is much to be said. But the matter which from my point
of view is more important than anything else and has preoccupied my mind concerns the
attack against the students in their dormitory and the young people [at Tehran University
campus]. This incident wrenched my heart [audience cries].
This incident was an unacceptable incident in the Islamic Republic of
Iran. An attack against the home and residence of a group of people, particularly at night
or during congregation prayers, is by no means acceptable in the Islamic system of
government.
The young people of this country, whether they are students or non-students, are my children
[audience cries]. For me it is very difficult and hard to
bear anything which causes our young people inconvenience, dissension and mishap. It makes
no difference who was involved in this, whether he was a policeman in uniform or a
civilian, those who are in breach of the law and break the law in the Islamic Republic
must be dealt with in accordance with the law. But in the case of someone who has done no
wrong and who is resting in his own home, particularly in a student environment, I have to
say that what has taken place was very wrong and unjustified.
The fact that 100 or 200 people left the university hostel, said things
and shouted slogans cannot be an excuse, cannot be a reason for some people, whatever
uniform or title they might have, to enter the premises and behave
inappropriately. This
is even more important when the sacred name of the Law Enforcement Force is involved - any
action which would harm the reputation of the Law Enforcement Force would make matters
more difficult.
As you know, members of the Law Enforcement Force endanger their lives
working on the roads, on the borders, fighting the bandits. Many of them lose their lives
in order to guard our security. Is it fair that the actions of a few individuals should
harm the reputation of these forces for some people?
And it has been reported that some individuals used the sacred names of
Hussain and Zahra to enter the room of a basiji [para-military volunteer] or a
war-disabled student, to disrupt his sleep and to create that sort of incident. Is it
right that the name of Hussain, peace be upon him, or the sacred name of Zahra, peace be
upon her, is used in this manner?
These actions pain my heart. There are all these pious young people
thought out the country who are devoted to Imam Hussain, who are devoted to Fatemeh Zahra,
who are devoted to Islam, who are devoted to the country, devoted throughout the sacred
war, who brave any danger that might threaten the country. Is it right that a few
individuals should use those sacred names and cause this incident? This was a very bitter,
incident for me.
Of course, I have stressed that the incident should be investigated.
The honorable president and other government officials are to appoint an investigation
team. I support this and I might appoint someone to the team. The team should investigate
the incident.
I want to make several points. One point is addressed to the students,
another to all the Iranian people, another point is addressed to you, the young people,
and another point is addressed to the enemy.
What I have to say to the students is this: Watch out for the enemy.
Try to know and recognize your enemy. Don't ever be complacent or negligent about knowing
your enemy. Try to recognize and know the strangers who, dressed up as your
friends, seek
to infiltrate your ranks everywhere. Try to see the invisible hands. Try to see the
invisible hands.
No one will ever be honored or praised for being negligent. No one will
ever be praised or eulogized for shutting his eyes and turning away from reality. If a
careless or negligent person
receives a blow, he has no one but himself to blame. So you need to
take care and be vigilant. Students are an honorable and valuable sector of our society.
Our students are being targeted by our enemy. For many years our
enemies have been trying to make our students take a confrontational stand against the
political establishment in this country. They [the enemies] have not succeeded. And
they're not going to succeed in the future either. [The audience express its approval by
chanting "Allahu Akbar", "Allahu Akbar", "Allahu Akbar",
"Khamene'i is our leader", "death to the enemies velayat-e faqih",
"death to the US", "death to Israel" and "death to the
hypocrites"].
They shouldn't think that if a few infiltrators use an opportunity to
fish in troubled waters and infiltrate the student community to say things and shout a few
slogans we are going to make mistakes. No, we are not going to make any mistakes. We know
our audience. These students are our children, they belong to us, they belong to this
country. It is the enemy who wants to
infiltrate the student community and commit acts of corruption in their name. The students should be vigilant
themselves. Who are these people who want to misuse
this time of the year, this sensitive season, the time of university exams and the
university entrance test?
At this time of year, all families who have a young student try their
best so that their young student is able to concentrate on the exams and the university
entrance test. Who are these people, who are the enemies of the future of this country and
its universities, who are diverting the attentions and creating diversions? They are
encouraging the students to stay away from their class, to stay away from the
exams, to
hold rallies. Who are these people? Students should be the first people to open their eyes
and make a decision.
I also want to address the Iranian nation: Oh great and brave nation!
For 20 years you have kept out the enemy which was ousted by the revolution. You did not
give the enemy the chance to return. You should be vigilant now. I have said repeatedly in
the recent years and I say it again. I tell the Iranian nation, its officials,
everyone:
The enemy is trying to infiltrate and they will come through any opening that they can
find. You should maintain your vigilance. The enemy is targeting our national
security.
National security is the most important thing for a nation. If there is no national
security the government will not be able to work, there will be no construction. No
problems are going to be solved if there is chaos and insecurity. The people's
economy,
the people's cultural issues, their social issues, their political issues, all these will
be destroyed if there is no security and this is what the enemy wants. Iranian people
everywhere should understand this, and they do understand it. Bihamdillah, the nation is
vigilant.
I would like to say something to you young people. My dear young ones,
you are the hopes of the revolution and Islam. Your behavior can quickly move this country
so it blossoms. When the young people of our country express themselves, make decisions
and act cleverly and adroitly, when they show forbearance and pay attention to
opportunities, then the whole country will make great progress. When blind enthusiasm is
involved, however, the enemy will immediately take advantage of the
situation. I have said
this repeatedly, and I shall repeat myself, I believe that young people in this country
should be present in all arenas. However, they should have discipline.
The moves which we witnessed, namely certain people's attack on the university, was caused by a lack of
discipline. It is wrong regardless of the name under
which it is done. It should be condemned. Even if it is done in the name of defending
religion, it is
still wrong. It is also wrong if it is done in the name of defending velayat. Have I not
said repeatedly that no one should resort to violence even at the gatherings of the
opponents? That will make the enemy happy. We have repeatedly said this. Why did they not
listen? Why do they not listen? Even if something which makes your blood boil
happens, you
should not resort to violence.
Let us say that they insulted the leader [audience cries]. You should
still be patient and remain silent. Even if they burn and tear up my photograph
[audience cries], you should remain silent
and preserve your strength for the day when the country needs it. You
should preserve it for the day when the young, faithful and hezbollahi force stands up to
the enemy [audience cries]. Now, let us say that a young person or a deceived student said
or did something. It does not matter. I forgive him [audience cries heavily].
I would like to say something to the enemy as well, regardless of who
it is and where it is. Our chief enemies who have planned these things are in the spy
agencies of the world. What was the money which the American Congress allocated to
fighting against the Iranian system spent on? In fact, a much greater amount was
spent.
Well, it is quite clear that it was spent on carrying out such planning. Those enemies
should know that the dream of returning America to this country is a nightmare which will
never come true. [audience chants: "Allahu Akbar", "Allahu Akbar",
"Allahu Akbar", Khamene'i is our leader, death to enemies of velayat
faqih,
death to US, death to the monafeqin and Saddam, death to Israel - death to US, death to US
]
There are those who have been lying in ambush for 20 years. They are
among the despicable internal elements. They are the ostracized and hated political
elements who were extracted and
thrown out by the nation like a rotten tooth. They have been lying in
ambush for 18, 19 or 20 years to take their revenge on this nation, the Imam [Khomeini]
and Imam Khomeini's name and path. They should know that they have made a
mistake. They
made a mistake during this affair as well. They betrayed themselves. They exposed their
faces. It is true that they dealt a
treacherous blow to our intelligence machinery. In this case, they also
dealt a blow to our law-enforcement machinery. However, the committed servants and the
dedicated unknown soldiers of the Islamic Republic will gather the necessary
intelligence.
They know who is where and what they are doing. They cannot use such methods and prevent
the people from fighting for their independence and their beloved Islam. They cannot
prevent them from fighting against their enemies.
I should say one thing to the various political factions. You gentlemen
who are the leaders of political factions and tendencies should now understand what we
told you. We told you that when you, the insiders, fight each other over nonsensical
matters, the enemy will take advantage of the situation. Now you can see what has
happened. That was one example. Did you see how the enemy took advantage of the
situation?
Abandon such activities. Of course, we do not mind if there are different points of view
and political differences. We do not insist that everyone should think the same way.
However, you should define limits to your political activities and political
infighting.
You should draw a red line and a limit. Do not fight each other without paying attention
to important matters, because then you would be so busy that you would permit the enemy to
enter the arena.
Look at the kind of uproar which was created over the press bill and
various other issues. Look at the fighting. The only thing that mattered was the issue of
factionalism. What was it all about? Because a bill was being passed by the
Majlis.
I am not referring to a particular political current. I am addressing everyone. For me there are no differences between political factions and
tendencies. For
me the criteria against which everything should be measured are the path of God, the path
of the Imam [Khomeini], the path of Islam, protecting the country, taking into
consideration the interests of the people and protecting the future of the
country. Those
are the things which are important to me. It does not make any difference to me whether a
certain person belongs to faction A or faction B. I am saying this to everyone. You should
be vigilant as well.
The last thing which I would like to say is about our Imam and leader,
the Lord of the Age, may our souls be sacrificed for him [reference to Imam Mahdi]
[audience chants: May God's peace and benedictions be upon Muhammad and his progeny ]. O
our Sayyed and leader [audience cries], you are our witness before Almighty God
[audience cries] and you can witness that we are prepared to defend God' s cause until our last
dying breath [audience cries]. My greatest wish and achievement would be to sacrifice my
life in pursuit of this glorious, beneficial and promising path [audience cries
heavily].
God willing, Almighty God will make you successful. May God's peace and blessings be upon
you [audience chants: we are not like the people of Kufa, to leave Ali alone].

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Honourable Speakers and deputies of legislative and consultative
assemblies of the Islamic Countries
Assala'mu Alaykum Va Rahmatulla'h Va Baraka'toh
I begin by expressing my most sincere welcome to the distinguished
guests who have gathered here at the invitation of the Islamic Consultative Assembly to
hold the first official and independent meeting of Islamic Inter-parliamentary Union and I
wish this meeting every success. Formation of legislative Assemblies in Islamic countries
in present form during the current century has become prevalent, but in
principle, Islam
is the harbinger and pioneer of establishing popular consultative governments within the
context of divine revelations and commands. Based on divine instructions of "consult
with them in the affairs", the beloved prophet of Islam sought consultations on
important affairs of the Islamic government, and if the majority votes went against his
views, in some cases he chose to abide by his companions' vote. It can be said that this
was one of the secrets of rapid and unprecedented progress of Muslims at the dawn of the
history of Islam.
The idea of establishing an Islamic Inter-parliamentary Union is a
valuable initiative by Islamic countries and we should appreciate its sponsors.
However,
what would guarantee its efficiency, durability and progress, is the reconsideration of
the problems of Islamic world and finding practical solutions to be presented to the
governments of the Islamic countries on one hand and to the organisation of Islamic
conference on the other, because resolution of complicated problems of the Islamic world
would not be possible except through active participation of every single Islamic country
and collective international efforts within the context of Islamic Institutions such as
the Organisation of Islamic Conference.
Muslims' role as the standard bearer of world culture and civilisation
for a thousand years is a vivid illustration of Islam's capacity for the development and
prosperity of Islamic societies. Frustration with the alien culture and inclination to
return to Islam have become rampant in the Islamic world in an accelerated
manner. In a
country such as Iran, Islamic system of government under the leadership of Imam Khomeini
and vigilance, perseverance and bravery of Iranian Muslim people has been shaped and today
Islam is the form and the content of the country's system of governance. In the other
Islamic countries the growing tendency towards Islam and supremacy of the Islamic values
is amazing, but the enemies of Islam are not remaining idle and have risen to confront
Islam, and you honourable representatives of the parliaments of the Islamic countries
should continue your consultations to find ways and means of strengthening and
institutionalising these tendencies.
In view of the relative free nature of legislative assemblies, away
from bilateral and international diplomatic considerations you can review sufferings and
problems of Muslims and voice your concerns about them. Unfortunately lack of
co-ordination and international co-operation are among the weaknesses of Muslims. Today
the Islamic world is faced with numerous disasters that emanate from the pressures and
atrocities of its united enemies, and the weakness of its divided friends. Having not
relieved from the pain and plight of Bosnian people, we face yet another tragedy in
Kosovo, where Muslim people, under the multiple pressures of both Nato and Serb forces
have been struggling with the horror of displacements, famine, diseases and annihilation
of their Islamic identity. Unfortunately, the Islamic world has not carried out its duties
towards. this grave problem.
The dear Palestine continues to be under the captivity of the
oppressive Zionist regime and its supporters, particularly the United States. The South
Lebanon and Golan heights are still under the occupation of the aggressors. Afghanistan is
plagued with division and hostility leading the country into further destruction. The
people of Kashmir are living under difficult conditions.
Another scourge that is threatening the Islamic societies, being used
to disseminate a rogue culture aimed at reasserting the imposition of unethical values and
westernised ideas to captivate particularly the youths, is the Western cultural
onslaught.
Audio and visual waves which are worse than warships and warplanes arc domination of the
enemies of Islam, paving the way for the and humiliate Muslims. It is the responsibility
of this Meeting to find practical ways to fight against these destructive
campaigns, and
at the same time adopt appropriate policies for the promotion of Islamic rich
culture,
values and beliefs. Conveying the divine message of Islam to the non-Islamic world
especially to the western societies who are frustrated with the defeated materialistic
ideas, and are rigorously in search of spirituality, is also part of the duties of the
international Islamic forums.
Marxism has now been placed in the museums of history, and Capitalism
has failed to address the increasing spiritual needs of people in Western
societies. Today
the power of Islam in meeting human spiritual demands is far greater than those of other
faiths or schools of thought. These are a few examples of the problems and needs of
Muslims at the contemporary time, and the distinguished representatives of Islamic
countries' legislative assemblies should find solutions to overcome these
complexities. It
will be appropriate to institutionalise the principle of consultation, co-ordination and
Islamic co-operation at an international level. Our international intricacies would not be
resolved without collective co-operation of Islamic countries. Hopefully, the Islamic
world will witness the day when a common assembly comprising representatives of the whole
Muslim Ummah is formed in order to make important. decisions towards the utilisation of
Islamic tremendous resources to the best interests of Muslims. I pray to the Almighty God
to bestow upon all of you every success in serving the Islamic nations and the Muslim
Ummah.

On the Auspicious Occasion of Hajj 01 Dhu al-Hijjah 1419 (26.3.1999)
In The Name Of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful
Praise be to God, the Lord of the universe and salutation And peace be
upon His trusted, noble messenger and his Immaculate progeny and chosen
Companions:
Once again the memorable days of Hajj are with us. The days during
which the eager hearts of the faithful are drawn by the divine calls of Allah, towards
ka'bah the focal points of all hopes. During these days some fortunate souls are brought
together from every corner of the world to assemble at a blessed ground that has witnessed
Ebraham's (pbuh) call to unity and Mohammed's (pbuh) call to Islam. This is a unique
occasion and a golden opportunity for the pilgrims present 'who are the representative s
of the grand Islamic Ummah', to begin soul searching and have a critical look at the
single Ummah and at its ways to salvation and rectitude. It is extremely vital for those
gathered at this congregation to discern the reality and the truth that are often hidden
from the eyes behind the vails of ethnic, racial and linguistic prejudices. Among the many
lessons that one may learn from this soul searching and self-appraisal, two major issues
stand out:
1. The richness and greatness of the wealth that the Islamic Ummah has
been blessed with.
2. The extreme danger that is prowling and threatening to destroy this
immense blessings.
The Islamic faith, its plain teachings, profound instructions, and its
comprehensive injunction constitute the great assets of Islamic Ummah. By presenting
profound and rational vision of man and universe, by advocating the most pure notion of
divine unity and presenting a balance moral and spiritual codes of conduct, by offering an
all embracing social and political systems etc. etc., Islam is inviting each and every
member of the human race to cleans themselves from all evil and every weakness, meanness
and impurity and thereby illuminate their soul by the light of faith, purity,
detachment, sincerity, love, hope and happiness and also to purge their outer lives from all vestiges
of poverty, ignorance, discrimination, backwardness, inertia, oppression,
imposition,
humiliation and deceit. In order to attain peace and harmony in life 'that all men long
for' it is necessary for man to possess the moral and spiritual purification that cleanses
him from evils and abominations as well as collective and polarised struggle that help him
in his inevitable effort against nature and those who represent the oppressive and
arrogant regimes. By defining the meaning of existence and life, and presenting the right
path, Islam helps man to provide for himself a truly tranquil and serene life and guide
him to the straight path of Allah. All Islamic injunctions and regulations, all of its
principal guidelines in political, economic and social areas together with its personal
devotional obligations are complementary parts of one prescription, leading to an idyllic
and poised life for man. The eternal Hajj congregation and all its relevant rites are
nothing but the manifestation of the fusing and coming together of the spiritual elevation
of all Muslims and their struggle for a collective and co-ordinated action.
That form a wonderful fusion of glory and humility, of power and humbleness, of internal and external struggle and
action, is nothing but the manifestation
of the fusing of spiritual and physical struggle for the realisation of a pure human life
that is presented to Muslims and prepares the pilgrim for the greater tasks he has ahead
of him. Today most human communities have sunk into the depths of mental confusion and
spiritual decadence and suffer from many social and personal problems that are imposed on
them by the world's dominant, arrogant, materialistic powers. They are in need of Islam
and its guidance more than ever before. The Islamic message therefore is not only
attractive and beneficial to the poor and the weak nations of the world but is equally
rewarding for wealthier people in the industrialised countries, who are sinking more
deeply into the mires of spiritual poverty, mental confusion and emptiness every day. The
increasing inclination towards Islam (according to the available data) of the people in
these advanced, Western countries, especially among their younger generations, who are
frustrated with the emptiness of their material world, is a great indicator of this
trend.
Recognition and proper application of this great assets, would provide Muslims with the
means of not only bringing about a great change in their own lives, but also to rid their
countries of the spiral of weakness, dependency, backwardness and decline that they are
caught in at present. If in the past, due to ignorance or deliberate enmities, Islam was
made to appear to be meant for mosques and altars and generally like any other religion
kept as a private matter. If it was said that Islam was silent or indifferent to economic
and political questions, to social movements and to international issues. If in the
past,
the colonial powers and the oppressive governments and despotic regimes advocated the
thesis of "separation of religion and politics" to silence Muslims' call for
reform of their societies and crush all Islamic uprisings. However, with the establishment
of the Islamic Republic in Iran which has single handedly and successfully overcome all
the plots as well as all the political, economic and military plans against it. That has
resisted the powerful onslaught of disbelief, arrogance and tyranny, also frustrated
conspiracies by the United States, world Zionism and their allies that tried to destroy
Iran or to lead it astray with all their might, while taking great steps towards progress
and complete sovereignty during the last two decades, all those misinterpretations of
Islam and false theories have been neutralised and negated and the social and political
theories of Islam have in reality proved their weight and validity.
The Islamic Republic, after a long hard march, going through numerous
obstacles that were laid down by the arrogant, oppressive international powers, after
victory in its eight-year of military confrontation and many other political,
economic,
security and propaganda battles, has shown its ability in administering the affairs of a
large country. It has been able to mobilise its people and to motivate others, to confront
events and successfully establish its presence in the international arena.
The Islamic Republic has been able, inspite of all the hostile
international confrontation to take giant leaps in the area of construction and
engineering. In such a short time, it has been able, in addition to the achievements
mentioned above, to strengthen, accelerate and reawaken the Islamic movements within the
Islamic nations, leading to an even more worldwide success for the Muslim Ummah. Since the
victory of Islam in Iran, The world has witnessed a powerful effort for the return to the
pure source of Islam. Today Islam is more proud than dver, in showing its powerful
presence every where and kindling the flame of hope and aspiration in the heart of the
oppressed. This is indeed the greatest assets that Muslim Ummah posses. Yet there are
great dangers both internal and the external in the way this everlasting and eternal asset
is utilised. The internal danger is the old enemy that has often taken the shapes of a
distorted image of Islam, dogmatism, alienation, eclecticism, hopelessness, spiritual
weakness, mental scepticism, some or a combination of all these factors.
The faithful and forward looking people of Iran under the leadership of
the late, Imam Khomeini, were able to overcome and defeat this internal enemy
completely.
The success at this front paved the way for its victory at the political and military
fronts and the establishment of the system of Islamic Republic in Iran and two decade of
struggle to achieve the ideals of this system. Despite this victory, we must not be
complacent, because as long as the external enemy is not destroyed and is actively
confronting Islam and the Islamic Republic, the danger exists that the inter-enemy may be
brought back to life. The responsible leaders and officials in this country take this
threat very seriously. What we have called "the cultural invasion" and have
often warned our intelligent nation, specially our youth and have asked them to be mindful
of it and never cease to combat it, is nothing but the manifestation of our enemies
concerted effort using every mean at their disposal, from news media, political weapons
and security channels, to reawaken and revive our internal enemy. In fact the whole empire
of wealth and military arrogance headed by the United States of America is engaged in
exerting its utmost pressure against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The American regime and
the international Zionist network, having been frustrated by the failure of their economic
and military confrontation with the Islamic Republic, have now intensified their publicity
campaigns to influence the Soul and the minds of world Muslims, who are sympathetic to
Iran, and particularly to frustrate the faithful Iranian Peoples.
Their intention is to make the Islamic Republic, the very symbol of
Islam's comprehensiveness, adopt a defensive position and depriving it of taking
initiatives in its confrontation with its enemies. To achieve their evil purpose, they use
the flashy slogans of human right, freedom and fight against terrorism and hypocritically
accuse the Islamic Republic of violating human rights, freedoms, women's right and
sponsoring terrorism. The American government speaks of "human rights" while
themselves, when dealing with weaker nations, have the most contemptible records of
violation of human rights. They claim to combat terrorism, while they protect some of the
most dangerous terrorists in the world. They speak of "democracy" and then they
support some of the most despotic regimes in different parts of the world. While they cry
for "freedom and liberties", they do not tolerate the slightest example of free
speech revealing the true nature of the Zionist regime and its increasing atrocities and
cruelties against other people, neither in their country and nor any where else. They
speak of "Women's Rights" while American women are being increasingly harassed
and humiliated at home and in the office. They always boast of being the standard bearers
of democratic participation in government, but whenever and wherever the Muslims establish
a government, they try to crush them with all their might and support any military coup or
political conspiracy to oust the Muslim from governing themselves! In American political
judgement, the Palestinian and the Lebanese Refugees, who fight against the occupiers of
their homes, are "Terrorists", but the Zionist terrorists who are constantly
launching military attacks against Lebanese towns and villages, who torture the
Palestinian prisoners by the most barbaric methods, and demolish Palestinian homes and set
up Zionist settlements in their places, are people worthy of receiving billions of dollars
in aid! In American political judgement, a system, as that of the Islamic
Republic, an
example of the strongest ties between the people and their government, its
constitution,
its every legal organ and its very establishment have been decided upon by the free will
and the free election of its people, is "undemocratic", but some of the most
tyrannical autocracies whose people have never known any election, polling or the rule of
law, are acceptable to them in the least objectionable ways! For the Islamic republic that
has never attacked another country, the possession of even non-nuclear weapons is not
allowed and it is legal to usurp and freeze spare-parts of aircraft's and helicopters
already paid for, but filling the Persian Gulf with all sorts of unnecessary weapons and
fighters, and the arming of the Zionist regime to the teeth, and even with nuclear
weapons, is very proper! In the American publicity logic and the Zionist media, the
execution of heroin smugglers is a violation of human rights, but the kidnapping of the
Lebanese people and bombarding and the massacre of homeless villagers who have run away
from their blasted homes, have no relevance at all to respecting human rights! If you help
oppressed Muslims in the Balkan, it is against international norms, but staging military
coups by the CIA and Mossad in different countries is respecting international
norms!
Helping the Iraqi regime when it has attacked Iran and dropped chemicals on
Halabche, is
no offence, but sending foodstuff to the Iraqi people whose children, as a result of the
American blockade, starve to death at the rate of half a million a year, is a big
crime!
And this very American regime, with such contemptible past record, claims the leadership
of the world! Such a regime advocates a One-polar world system headed by half-witted
American leaders usually trapped in their own personal follies! And they wishfully try to
throw the honoured, Iranian people, their honest officials and their deeply
rooted,
popular government into a defensive position! Our Muslim brothers and sisters throughout
the world should know that the Islamic republic of Iran is strongly and steadfastly
marching along the path illuminated by the teachings of pure Islam.
This proud country, with its united leaders and the support and
solidarity of its faithful, intelligent people shall be marching on the lines drown by its
late, great leader, Imam Khomeini and will, despite all hostile,
political, economic and security, conspiracies and the loud-mouthed publicity campaigns of the
enemies, get closer
and closer to its important goals; and as, by the help and Grace of God, the enemy was
frequently frustrated in the last twenty Years, so will, the Iranian people, through their
faith and their virtuous deeds, implore God to bestow on them His help and mercy in the
future once again; so be it, if God will. In the end, I ask all our brothers and
sisters,
who have come from different parts of the world to gather around the beloved ka'ba to pray
to God for the well being of all Muslims and the victory of Islam.

leader of islamic revolution ayatollah ali khamenei's message to this year's
hajj:
in the name of god, the beneficent, the merciful.
praise be to god, the lord of all the world and salutation and peace be
upon his trusted, noble messenger, and his immaculate progeny and chosen
companions.
once again the memorable days of hajj are with us and the divine caller
is summoning the eager souls of the faithful towards the mecca of all hopes, bringing some
fortunate souls together from every corner of the world for an assembly at a blessed
sanctuary which has witnessed abraham's (peace be upon him) call to unity and mohammad's
(may peace be upon him and his posterity) call to islam. it is an auspicious occasion for
the elect pilgrim of the great and singular islamic ummah to take a searching look at its
ways to rectitude and salvation, and to discern the truth manifested at this universal
congregation divorced from the walls of ethnic, racial or linguistic prejudices. amongst
many great lessons that may be drawn from such a contemplation and introspection, two
stand out more conspicuously:
a) the wealth of treasures and bountiful assets possessed by the
islamic ummah, on the one hand and
b) the extreme dangers threatening this immense trove of treasures on
the other.
this bountiful asset and wealth of treasures of the islamic ummah
encompasses the islamic ideology, its explicit teachings and clear-cut
instructions, and
its solemn wholesome, comprehensive injunction for man's life. islam is inviting each and
every member of the human races to cleanse oneself from all evil and every
weakness,
meanness and impurity inwardly through the presention of a wise and profound perception of
man and universe, advocation of pure monotheism, sound ethical and spiritual
teachings,
establishment of all-embracing social and political norms and individual and people's
observance of divine obligations and practices in order to illuminate his soul with the
radiance of faith, purity, detachment, sincerity, love, hope and happiness and also to
purge his external world from all vestiges of poverty, ignorance, discrimination,
backwardness, inertia, oppression, imposition, humiliation and deceipt. in order to
provide for the desired, happy life of humankind, it is necessary, even
inevitable, for
man to benefit from moral values that cleanses him from evils and abominable
deeds.
through collective action and endeavors in social arenas his determination is fortified to
help him stand and guard against inevitable nature and the guardians of oppressive and
arrogant regimes. islam helps man to provide for himself a truly blissful life and guides
him to the straight path of god, by defining the meaning of life and existence, and
showing the right direction. all islamic injunctions, laws, codes, norms inclusive of all
of its principal guidelines in political, economic and social areas together with its
individual, devotional obligations are complementary parts of one prescription leading to
a tranquil and blissful life for humanity. and immortal rites at the congregation of hajj
are in fact the the true symbols of fusion of the spiritual transcendance and inner
sublimity of muslims that has been nurtured through their harmonious,
coordinated,
collective efforts. the pilgrimage with its magnificient mysterious mystical
rites, is a
blend of glory, might, humility, humbleness, and expression of both internal and external
jihad of purification of deeds. it is the continuous struggle in subjugating the inner man
in the process of true purification of the soul and that of his outer world that prepares
the pilgrim for the greater tasks that lay ahead of him.
today many communities have sunk into the quagmire of spiritual vacuity, bewilderment and aimlessness that has trapped them into endless difficulties and
conflicts. individuals in the society are caught in world materialist and power
maze. they
are in dire need of islamic ideology, teaching and guidance. a call to islam, therefore is
captivating, hope-inducing, and impelling not only to the nations burning in the flames of
poverty, deprivity and impotency, but probably more so to the people in the
wealthier,
industrialized countries who are perpetually deeply entrapped in the mires of spiritual
vacuity, bewilderment and nothingness.
according to available research, the ever-growing tendency of the
people in these advanced, western countries towards islam especially among their younger
generations who are frustrated with the vacuity of their material world is a great
indicator of the spiritual trend of growth. precise recognition and proper appreciation of
the bountiful assets and wealth of treasures of the world of muslims, muslims will be made
capable of bringing about real transformation in their community and help rescue muslim
nations from the current impotency, dependence, backwardness and denudation. once upon a
time as a consequence of certain deviasive thoughts and ill-intentions of the
enmities,
islam was made to appear that it could only be practiced within the four walls of the
mosques and minbars (preaching platforms) and that it was valuable in the matters related
to private life and purification of individual's inner-self. colonial powers, governments
and despotic regimes in order to sell out their satanic conspiracy of separation of
powers, promulgated the idea `the separation of religion from politics' as an excuse to to
silence the muslims, quell all the islamic uprisings and suppress societies which rose to
bring about reforms. according to their concept, "islam has no voice over any of the
aspects in the economic, political and international issues and social
challenges.
with the triumph of the islamic revolution in 1979, today the islamic
republic in iran has successfully overcome all designs and plots, political, economic and
military, single-handedly. iran has not only resisted the onslaught of the powerful front
of unbelief, arrogance and tyranny, but has also foiled all forms of conspiracies by the
united states, world zionism and their allies that tried to either destroy the bases of
the islam republic or lead it astray with all their might. today, we are observers to the great strides taken in the direction of
the establishment of solid foundation of the islamic sovereign state and achievements in
the social, economic, political and cultural areas during the last two decades. all those
false concepts have been proved to be futile. the islamic republic, after a long hard
march, going through numerous obstacles set up by the arrogant, oppressive international
powers, after victory in an eight-year military confrontation and many other
political,
economic security and propaganda battles, has shown its mettle in administering the
affairs of a large country. in addition, it has proved its capablity in mobilizing the
masses of the people, in foreseeing and confronting great events and in its successful
presence in the international scene.
the islamic republic has also shown its competence and genius in the
areas of construction and reconstruction, despite many hostile international
confrontations and without receiving any political or economic assistance from
others. the
other accomplishment of the islamic republic of iran include the strengthening,
acceleration and the reawakening movements among the islamic nations, which have resulted
in certain great achievements of the muslims throughout the world. the reawakening process
is perpetually gaining momentum in dignity and power everywhere in the world of
islam.
today islam takes more pride at its newly revived position than before. it is showing its
powerful presence everywhere, kindling the flames of hope in the souls of contemporary
mankind. such is the boutiful asset and wealth of treasures of the islamic
ummah. thanks
to the blessed victory of islam in iran.
yet there are great dangers ahead in the way of exploiting this
everlasting asset. the two lurking perils that threaten the muslim world are, what may be
termed as the internal hazards and the external threat. the internal peril is the old
enemy that has often taken the shapes of a distorted conception of islam,
dogmatism, obscurantism, alienation, eclectic tendencies, hopelessness, spiritual
weakness, skepticism, or a combination of all or some of these factors. the enlightened progressive
people of iran, under the leadership the late great leader, imam khomeini, were made able
to overcome and defeat this internal enemy completely thus paving the way for many
victories at various political and military fronts for establishing an islamic, republican
sovereign state in iran besides fighting for its survival for some two decades. yet as
long as external enemy is actively confronting islam and islamic republic, the danger
exists that the internal enemy may be brought back to life, and this is a threat which is
taken most seriously by the responsible leaders and officials in this country. we have
termed this the enemy's `cultural encroachment' and have often warned our people,
specially our youth, about it and have asked them to combat it ceaselessly. the external
enemy is thus manifested by the accumulated efforts of all our enemies through the
exploitation of every political weapon, all news media and publicity channels, and
security instruments at their disposal for awakening the enemy within, that is, to revive
the internal enemy.
in fact, today the whole financial-military empire, headed by the
united states of america, is utilising all the available resources not only to greatly
minimize but effectively curtail the constructive influence of the islamic republic of
iran in the world of islam. the american regime and the international, zionist
network,
having been frustrated by the failure of their economic and military confrontations with
the islamic republic, have now embarked upon intensified their political and publicity
campaigns to influence the minds and souls of world muslims, who are sympathetic to
iran.
their satanic goal is particularly aimed at frustrating the faithful, iranian people. their intention is to make the islamic
republic, the very symbol of islam's comprehensiveness, adopt a defensive position and
become deprived of taking initiatives in its confrontation with the enemies; to achieve
this evil purpose, they hypocritically and demagogic accuse the islamic republic of
violating human rights, freedoms and liberties, women's rights and sponsoring
terrorism.
the american government speaks of `human rights', while they themselves, in their arrogant dealings with weaker
nations, have the most abominable
record of the violation of human rights. they claim to `combat terrorism' while they have
some of the most dangerous terrorists under their protection. in american political idiom
of judgment, the palestinian and lebanese refugees, who fight against the occupiers of
their homes are labelled as `terrorists. the zionist terrorists who are incessantly
launching military attacks against lebanese towns and villages, who torture the
palestinian prisoners by the most medieval methods, and who demolish palestinian homes and
set up zionist settlements in their places, are `not terrorists' but people worthy of
receiving billions of dollars in aid.
they speak of `democracy' when they support some of the most despotic
regimes in different regions of the world.
they speak of `freedom and liberties' while they cannot tolerate the
slightest example of free speech with regard to the nature of the zionist regime, and its
increasing atrocities and cruelties against other peoples, neither do they tolerate such
criticism in their own country, nor anywhere else.
they speak of `women's rights' while american women are being ever
harassed and humiliated at home and in the office.
they always boast of being the standard-bearers of `democratic participation' in
government, but whenever and wherever the muslim people establish a
government, they try to crush them with all their might and support any military coup or
political conspiracy to oust the muslim people from governing themselves.
in american political jargon of `judgment', a sovereign state as that
of the islamic republic, being a unique model of the strongest ties between the people and
their government, whose constitution, every legal organ and establishment have been
decided on free will and the free election of its people, is `undemocratic'!
however, some of the most tyrannical autocracies whose people have
never known any election, polling or the rule of law, are acceptable to them in the least
objectionable ways! the islamic republic that has never attacked another country is not
allowed to possess even conventional weapons classified as `non-nuclear weapons'.
however,
it is legal to usurp and freeze spare-parts of aircraft and helicopters already paid
for.
super saturating the persian gulf region with all sorts of unnecessary
weapons and fighters, and the arming to the teeth the zionist state with all forms of
nuclear weapon and other chemical weapons of mass destruction is regarded as a defensive
measure. in the american jargon of publicity logic and the zionist media, the execution of
heroin smugglers is a violation of human rights, but the kidnapping of the lebanese people

if you help oppressed muslims in the balkan, it is against
international norms, but staging military coups by the cia and mossad in different
countries is respecting international norms. assisting the iraqi regime when it has
attacked iran and dropped chemicals on halabche, is no offense, but sending foodstuff to
the iraqi people whose children, as a result of the american blockade, starve to death at
the rate of half a million a year, is a big crime! and this very american regime with such
abominable past record, claims the leadership of the world. such a regime advocates a
