Leader hails Tehran-Damascus ties04:20:45 Tehran, Sept 30 - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said on Monday Tehran-Damascus cooperation has special status in Iranian diplomacy. In a meeting with Syrian first Vice-President Abdulhalim Khaddam, the Supreme Leader said that the foundation for mutual cooperation was laid by the late Hafez Al-Assad and President Bashar Al-Assad is currently proceeding with the same trend. "Under the current circumstances in the region, especially in Palestine and Iraq, the regional states need cooperation," the Supreme Leader said. "Eruption of ethnic or religious conflict pose a great threat to Iraq. So, all Iraqi groups and the influential states in the region should help reinforce Iraqi solidarity and territorial integrity," the Supreme Leader said. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is suspicious about the Israeli and American intelligence services over the terrorist attacks which took place against Iraqi religious leaders including the late Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Baqer Hakim," the Supreme Leader said. "The late Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Baqer Hakim was the pillar of Iraq's independence and national sovereignty and an example of national resolve against occupation. The same approach will be followed by the incumbent Abdul Aziz Hakim," the Supreme Leader said. Abdul Aziz Hakim took the helm of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI) after the martyrdom of late Hakim. On the US threats to the regional states, the Supreme Leader said that the US resorts to threats to intimidate the statesmen of the regional countries. They should exercise close cooperation to neutralize the US policy against them. The Supreme Leader hoped that the Palestinian people and the Iraqis would be freed from the occupation and said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is optimistic about such a process happening soon.
Khaddam described Tehran-Damascus relations as excellent and called for further development of cooperation in all fields. The Syrian first vice-president offered an analysis about the situation in the Palestinian occupied territories and Iraq and said that the US military presence is detrimental to the entire region. "The current US administration has put the theory of clash of civilizations top on its agenda and is seeking to change what it calls the map of the Middle East. Of course, cooperation of the regional states will block such a plan," Khaddam said. He said that Syria supports Iraqi solidarity and territorial integrity adding that the United States takes the side of Israel in its mediation efforts. Khaddam said that the United States has failed in its mediation efforts including the Oslo accord signed by president Yasser Arafat and road map peace initiative. "If the regional states launch cooperation and adopt a unified stance toward Palestine, Israel can no longer succeed in its occupation objectives," he said. Unity helps solve Islamic World problems : Supreme LeaderTehran, Sept 3, IRNA -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said here Wednesday that problems of the Islamic World can be solved through relying on the Almighty God and the great Muslim Ummah and promoting convergence and unity. In a meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan, the Supreme Leader welcomed expansion of political, economic, social and cultural relations between Iran and Jordan. "Expansion of mutual ties would bear positive outcomes for the region," he said. Pointing to the neighborhood of Iran and Jordan with Iraq, the Supreme Leader highlighted the importance of exchange of views between the two countries' officials on the Iraqi issue. The Ayatollah said the Zionist regime is not committed to the signed agreements and added, "unity among the Arabs and Muslims and their insistence on defense and support for the defenseless Palestinian people would be the only solution to the issue under such circumstances that the enemy is not committed to any agreement." During the meeting, the Jordanian king voiced satisfaction over his visit to Iran and said that the two countries have great potentials to consolidate economic, industrial, social and political cooperation. He hoped Tehran and Amman would upgrade their relations through making use of such potentials and open new horizons in their ties. King Abdullah said the issues of Palestine and Iraq are the two serious problems of the Islamic World and said, "Coordination and consultation of Iran and Jordan would help restore stability and security in the region in line with mutual interests."
