Supreme Leader labels Zionist regime "imperialist ruse" (27.12.2000)

Tehran, Dec 27, IRNA -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said here Wednesday that establishment of the so-called Zionist regime in the Palestinian territory, the heartland of Islamic world, is a most malicious ruse of the imperialism to create division in the Islamic Umma. "If the Islamic Umma were unified, the enemies could never repress the Palestinian nation so fiercely in their homelands," Ayatollah Khamenei told ambassadors of the Islamic states on the occasion of the Eid-ul Fitr, marking the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan. He said: "It is an Islamic and humanitarian duty for the Muslims worldwide to support the Palestinians." The leader likened the Zionist regime to a "cancerous tumor" which, he added, poses a big threat to all Islamic states. He said that Israel should be wiped off the face of the earth. In the meantime, President Mohammad Khatami who was also present at the meeting, pointed to religious, ethnic and racial divisions among the Muslim nations and noted that the global arrogance (an allusion to the United States) is undertaking relentless efforts to disrupt the unity among the Islamic states. He also praised the Muslims worldwide for their participation in the mass rallies on the last Friday of Ramadhan, this year December 22, observed as the International Qods Day.

"It is a human, religious, wise and historical duty for all the Muslim nations to support the oppressed Palestinian nation as much as possible for them," Ayatollah Khamenei told a huge crowd of worshippers attending the Eid-ul Fitr congregational prayers, marking the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan at the compounds of Tehran's Mosalla (grand prayers ground). He said that the Palestinians are falling victims to the most savage atrocities by the Zionist regime. Reverting to domestic issues, Ayatollah Khamenei called for national unity in the country, saying that enemies are at work to create division in the country. The Ayatollah warned against groups involved in waging psychological war and rumor-mongering, saying they are behind myriads of problems in the country. He called on main apparatuses in the country to set aside their differences and fight "poverty, corruption and discrimination." The leader also ticked off political factions locked up in a war of attrition in the society. He warned that nobody in entitled to disparage the parliament (Majlis), the Judiciary, the Guardian Council, a watchdog body which screens all laws to ensure they do not contradict Islamic principles and the constitution and the state Expediency Council, which is the final arbiter between the GC and Majlis in case of discrepancies. Amid simmering political row between the reformers and conservatives, MPs called Tuesday for a motion to impeach the minister of justice. MP Davoud Soleimani on Tuesday told IRNA that more than 50 of his colleagues had signed a letter calling for Justice Minister Esmail Shoushtari to be impeached, and that many more were willing to do so. Iranian law holds that a minimum of 10 signatures are needed to start an impeachment motion. A simple majority in the 290-seat assembly is needed to pass a censure motion. Impeachment results in a minister's removal from office. On the other hand, the Judiciary is prosecuting President Mohammad Khatami's brother and two other reformist MPs. Mohammad Reza Khatami, political secretary of Iran's biggest pro-reform caucus along with two fellow MPs, Mohammad Dadfar and Ali Shakouri-Rad are being prosecuted by the Judiciary. Khatami also called on Abbasali Alizadeh, chief of Tehran's justice department, to resign over recent statements he had made against Iran's once flourishing, but now mostly banned, independent press.

In a meeting with family members of 80 martyred army generals and senior commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Law Enforcement Forces (LEF), the Supreme Leader said that the great Iranian nation has launched a national drive to hoist the flag of Islam and the martyrs of the Islamic Revolution and the sacred defence played a key role in safeguarding the Islamic Republic. Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the sacrifices made by the martyrs to help the Iranian nation and the human community attain the lofty goals of Islam.

The Leader said that the families of martyrs are expected to protect the bloods of the martyrs.

President, Cabinet members meet Supreme Leader (20.12.2000)

Tehran, Dec 20, IRNA -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei here Wednesday called upon the officials to take advantage of the current favorable atmosphere on the international stage to make up for the shortcomings in the country. Speaking in a meeting with President Khatami and members of his Cabinet, Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that the religious faith has to be considered as the best basis by the officials in dealing with all the state affairs. He said the officials should profit from the appropriate situation at the international arena to make headway as for the domestic issues while trying to further promote the unity among the society members. Ayatollah Khamenei praised President Khatami and the Cabinet ministers for the exhaustive efforts they made in serving the nation adding the people would appreciate the work and efforts of officials if they deal with the affairs on the basis of the Islamic principles and expediencies. As in the previous occasions, the Leader called on the officials to attempt to settle the many hardships and economic drawbacks facing the public saying if an acceptable level of welfare is not provided for the public, the entire system of the country would be overshadowed by the economic problems. The government must develop programs and formulate plans to effectively tackle poverty in the country, he said adding that the economic problems cannot be settled but through wise and expert work and planning.
The Supreme Leader stressed the need for the officials to design plans to raise the value of the national currency, to accelerate the growth of the domestic investments, to develop the exports sector, to reduce the rampant unemployment, and to protect the national forests and pastures. The officials should do their utmost to properly implement the laws and regulations and to seriously deal with any case of infraction and violation of law, he said adding that they have to prefer the public interests to those of the special interest groups. He also called for the officials to put aside issues of secondary importance and to deal with the essential ones instead and underlined that dealing with the state affairs while considering the political issues and tendencies would bring about negative consequences. President Khatami in the meeting said his government has made every effort within its power to render more services to the nation. Openness to criticism was described by the president as one of the charactristics of his cabinet. He noted that great strides have also been taken by the cabinet members in achieving the national prosperity. Commenting on the international Qods Day, the president said the muslims all over the world are duty bound to give their support to the oppressed people of Palestine through participating in the march marking the International Qods Day, slated for the last friday of the holy fasting month of Ramadhan. He added that the Cabinet minister along with the people will take part in the great march to renew allegiance with the ideals of the late Imam Khomeini and the Palestinians.

In his message on the eve of the International Qods Day, the Leader said the Muslims around the world would hold a magnificent rallies on Friday (December 22) to voice their support for the oppressed people of Palestine. The Leader extended greetings to Muslims throughout the world and prayed to the Almighty God for souls of those martyred for the cause of Palestine to rest in peace and for the victory of those fighting for liberation of Palestine. "This year, we are approaching the International Qods Day when great developments have taken place in the struggle between justice and injustice in the Palestinian territories and the Muslims have learned great lessons from it which would leave behind definite impact on this process," the Leader said. "In the past several months, the Zionist regime has embarked on a new wave of suppression, violence, bloodshed and genocide throughout Palestine in which numerous elderly, youth, women and children were massacred and groups of those injured have been transferred to hospitals in Islamic states. Almost every day in the holy month of Ramadan, the Zionist regime has committed crimes against Muslim people, but the new generation in Palestine have withstood every tragedy to reach a bright future and victory," the Leader said in his message to Muslims across the globe. The Supreme Leader cited a verse from Holy Quran which conveys good message for those who suffer from tragedy and resist for the sake of God. The Leader said that the Intifada of al-Aqsa Mosque (since September 28, 2000) and the continued genocide of the Palestinian youth and children proved that the armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine, a subject that the Muslim nations are raising in their Friday prayers to voice support to Intifada and pool assistance for the Palestinians. Ayatollah Khamenei said that the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and Intifada of al-Aqsa Mosque are indications of the enemy's collapse. One day in solitary confinement equal to 10 days in jail (17.12.2000)

Tehran, Dec 17, IRNA -- Mohammad Dadfar, the rapporteur of the Majlis Commission in charge of implementing Article 90 of the Constitution, said here Sunday that Majlis is drafting a bill on the basis of which one day in solitary confinement should be taken as 10 day in public prison. The bill is based on a directive issued by the Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei concerning solitary confinement. Dadfar told IRNA that recently the Supreme Leader had ordered that one day in solitary confinement be taken as ten days in public prisons. Dadfar who is an MP from Bushehr and Genaveh said that on this basis a plan has been drafted which legalizes keeping a prisoner in solitary confinement and determines the limits of the ruling. He said following receipt of expert views, the bill will be brought up for debate at the Majlis.

Addressing thousands of fasting worshippers present at Friday Prayers held in Tehran University campus downtown Tehran, he stated that the Palestinian crisis was the most important issue facing the Islamic world while stressing that the Zionists are erroneously trying to suggest that the Palestinian issue is a domestic problem for Israel. The Zionists should know that the Muslims are reluctant to believe such venomous propaganda, he said, adding the Muslims consider the issue of Palestine the most critical crisis in the world which requires an international attention and response. The Leader further pointed out that it was a religious obligation for all the Muslims peoples across the world to struggle to secure the liberation of occupied lands of the Palestine. The main aim pursued by the global arrogance to form the Zionist government was to prepare the grounds for continuation of its expansionist polices and hinder the progress of the Islamic world, the Leader noted. Ayatollah Khamenei said today the Palestinian youths are well aware that no positive results would be achieved through the reconciliation with the Zionists, the reason why they consider the sole solution is continued struggle against the Israeli occupiers to secure the liberation of their lands. The violent acts to bully the Palestinians into silence cannot keep the oppressed palestinian youth reticent for ever, the leader stressed, adding that the rage of the young palestinians would ruin the Zionists' strongholds and palaces in the end. He called on the intentional community to show reaction to the violation of the human rights in the Palestinian territory while condemning the support given to Zionists by the "corrupt American government". While stressing the return of the Palestinian refugees to their homeland, he said the sole solution to the Palestinian problem was to let the Palestinians, whether Muslims, Jews or Christians, to decide on their fate and on the form of a government for the territory.

In the first sermon of the Friday prayers, Ayatollah Khamenei called upon the Iranian officials to consider the Islamic instructions while trying to reform the society. In an Islamic society the officials should not live in the lap of luxury, he said adding that they have to avoid accepting governmental posts to make money and to gain wealth. He called on the officials to follow the invaluable directives of the first Imam of Muslims Imam Ali (AS) in a year which is named "The Year of Imam Ali (AS)". He stressed the establishment of a democratic system accompanied by religious values and principles based on the vote of the people in the elections in Iran. Underlining the importance of the Islamic principle of "enjoining the right and forbidding the wrong", the leader said the poeple should contribute to the good performance of officials by encouraging them to take the right path and to avoid the wrong direction. Leader stresses the role of culture in destiny of nations (13.12.2000)

Tehran, Dec 13, IRNA -- The Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has stressed the importance of culture in the destiny of nations. Addressing the members of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, Ayatollah Khamenei elaborated on the issue of culture and said social and national characteristics of a nation is shaped by culture and this is the reason why all officials should be sensitive to the issue. The Leader concluded that if unhealthy cultural products such as unhealthy ideas, moralities, behavior, media and books which can weaken the beliefs of people exist in a country, they should be considered as anti-human products and everyone should feel responsible towards this issue. Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader drew a comparison between the issues of faith and morality in the West and Islam and said the Western societies which look at the world from a materialistic point of view do not attach the same importance and value to ideology and morality as followers of Islam do. The Supreme Leader said the Western world becomes extremely violent and dogmatic as far as the issues of power and wealth are concerned but on the cultural issues they apparently show leniency. Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that from the Islamic point of view, people should be sensitive to cultural losses to others as they are to their own beloved ones and concluded that the Islamic government cannot be indifferent towards what is offered on the cultural products market. While stressing the fact that the government should be sensitive to what is happening in the field of culture, the Leader strongly rejected the idea of using force in order to impose a specific idea and went on to say that those people who resort to force in the field of moral, ideological and religious issues are not mentally sane. The Supreme Leader urged the officials not to be indifferent to the issue of culture and said "the Westerners who ask us to abandon our beliefs are so sensitive to their own customs and ways of life." As an example, the Leader cited the problem raised by the French before President Khatami's visit to Paris in 1999 when the host made commotion over an insignificant protocol-related issue. Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader pointed to the problem of unemployment and said while the universities in Iran have developed and the number of students has increased, statistics tell Iranian officials that a great number of university graduates will be unemployed in coming years. Stressing that the issue can be a big problem, the Leader urged the officials to seek a solution to this social plight. On the issue of the educational system of the country, the Leader stressed the necessity of revising and updating the system and said that it should conform itself with the needs of the state. The Leader said that he still believes that the college students should be politicized and get acquainted with political issues; however, the Leader stressed that the universities should not be transformed into a club of political parties. On the issue of brain drain, the Leader said it is regretful that some of the most talented youth leave the country but pointed out that there are reasons for this phenomenon. He said since they return to the home country after a few years, too much sensitivity should not be shown towards the issue. He said they were trying to check the Iran's march to accomplishment in that area and deal an economic blow on the country. Ayatollah Khamenei added the political situation in the country and the very high number of gifted people here had offered good prospects for scientific progress, and urged academicians to concentrate their efforts on national progress in the area of learning and scientific progress. He said "the national scientific move since the 1979-Islamic Revolution has been on the right course," "but," he added, "the nation needs (firmer) determination to compensate for (the past) backwardness." Ayatollah Khamenei said that since the triumph of the Islamic Revolution Iran had become scientifically self-relying. His remarks came after he had warned Saturday against the transformation of the country's universities into "political clubs." He called on the officials of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology Saturday to "fight against the efforts by certain elements and political groups who seek to take advantage of the universities (for their own private goals)." Since 1998, college students have felt free to stage rallies on the campuses to make their voice heard on aspects of the national situation. On December 6, thousands of students marked the anniversary of deadly riots that day in 1953 between the defunct shah's police and students opposing a scheduled visit to Tehran by the then US vice-president Richard Nixon. Three students were killed in the deadly clashes.

Supreme Leader addresses members of HCCR (9.12.2000)

Tehran, Dec 7, IRNA -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said on Saturday the officials of Iran's system are duty bound to regularly consider the cultural situation of the society. Addressing members of the High Council of the Cultural Revolution (HCCR), Ayatollah Khamenei said the role of the culture is of paramount importance and extremely vital in determining the fate of a nation. He said the culture was the basis of everyone's acts and behaviors in the society and added if the Islamic beliefs are accompanied by a high culture and discipline, favorable grounds would be prepared for achieving the aims of the Islamic Revolution.

Unhealthy cultural means in the various fields of arts and the abuse of the cultural means would undermine the human thoughts and beliefs, the Leader stressed adding that the society members are all duty bound to deal with such cases of cultural abuses. He went on to say that the conception of culture from the viewpoint of islamic is different from the western conception of culture. Further he stated that in the Western countries the officials are not worried about the cultural issues in the society so long as the politics or economy are not hit by the cultural phenomena emerging in the society, but Islam is not indifferent to any cultural issue due to the great attention it attaches to the fate of the human beings. He stressed the importance of justice in the domain of cultural affairs and said the Islamic justice in the field of culture means that in the Islamic state, it is up to the society members to try to prevent the cultural and spiritual deviations to which some may fall prey. He said it is an unforgivable injustice for the people to be indifferent vis-a-vis the cultural deviation of the individuals and toward their fate. The Leader further said the officials with all the three Branches of the government shoulder the responsibility of leading the people in the right path by promoting their awareness through the usage of the available possibilities and resources. Such ideal cultural grounds could be created through developing effective programs, he stressed, adding that the HCCR could play a crucial role in this regard. He thanked the officials with the HCCR for their exhaustive efforts and called on all the institutions and agencies to follow the directives and measures adopted by the HCCR in the cultural domain. Tehran, Dec 8, IRNA -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called here Thursday on students to watch out for machinations plotted by enemies to look down on learning and science at the universities. He told a group of visiting college students that today, the most significant responsibility on the shoulder of the students is to stand against those seeking to get college campuses entangled in marginal and irrelevant issues. Ayatollah khamenei said that since the triumph in 1979 of the Islamic Revolution, enemies have been trying to deprive the younger generation of the fruits of this great event. Ayatollah Khamenei said that the Islamic Revolution has paved the way for the younger generation to compensate for backwardedness.

The leader urged the students to be pious, saying, "piety can affect scientific and political activities and it will help in adopting an attitude toward different issues." He said that political climates should be cleared of those trying to open the doors for infiltration of arrogant powers, especially the United States, into the political and economic sectors of the country. Ayatollah Khamenei also called on struggling political factions to set aside their differences and live and let live. The leader's address comes one day after the 'Students Day' which was established in 1953 after riots broke out between police and students who were opposing a scheduled visit by the then US Vice-President Richard Nixon to Tehran. In the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution, an Islamic system took shape and an Islamic state was formed in Iran which has become a good example to follow by the countries of the Muslim world, he added.
