Women's rights

Tehran Times--- March 18.1997

TEHRAN -- The Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, in his recent visit to southern province of Khuzestan, once again underlined women's right in Islam and said that Islam has recommended moderation without any extremities concerning the rights of the women. Addressing a large gathering of women who gathered to welcome him, the Leader said that Islam recognizes the respective physical nature of men and women but does not allow any oppression against the women. The leader slammed the local tribal custom which forces young girl to marry against their will. He said, "this tribal tradition has nothing to do with Islam. No one has the right to impose a marriage on a girl. Some Khuzestan tribes force girls to marry cousins or older men. Refusal often results in the girl's ostracism by the family or death at the hands of her father or brother. .Ast
